Opening & Closing the Register
Start and end each shift with a proper cash count to keep your daily reconciliation accurate.
What You'll Learn
- How to open the register with a starting cash float
- How to close the register at end of shift
- How to read the closing summary and identify cash variances
Before You Begin
- The Open/Close Register feature must be enabled on your subscription plan
- You are logged in as a cashier or owner on the Cashier screen
- For closing: all sales for the shift have been completed
Opening and closing the register is typically done by the cashier at the start and end of each shift. If your store does not use the open/close register feature, you can skip this tutorial.
Opening the Register
Step 1: Navigate to the Cashier Screen
Go to the POS Cashier screen (/pos). If the register has not been opened for the current session, Point automatically displays the Opening Register dialog before allowing any sales.
Step 2: Enter the Opening Cash Float
In the Opening Register dialog, enter the amount of cash that is physically in the till at the start of the shift. This is called the opening float — for example, SAR 200.00 in small bills and coins kept for making change.

Step 3: Click Open Register
Click Open Register. Point records the opening float against this session and the Cashier screen becomes fully active for sales.
Closing the Register
Step 1: Finish All Sales for the Shift
Complete any pending transactions before closing. Returns can still be processed after closing in most configurations, but it is cleaner to close with no open carts.
Step 2: Open the Close Register Dialog
From the POS, locate and click the Close Register button (typically in the top navigation or POS menu). Point opens the closing summary view.
Step 3: Review the Closing Summary
The summary shows the full picture of the shift:
- Total sales — gross sales amount for the shift
- Returns — total value of returns processed
- Net sales — total sales minus returns
- Payment method breakdown — how much was collected in cash, card, and any other methods
- Number of transactions — invoice count for the shift
- Expected cash in drawer — opening float plus all cash sales minus any cash refunds

Step 4: Enter Your Physical Cash Count
Count the actual cash in the till and enter the total in the Physical Cash Count field. Point compares this against the expected cash amount and displays the variance (the difference between what the system expects and what you counted).
A variance of SAR 0.00 means the till balances perfectly. A positive variance means there is more cash than expected; a negative variance means there is a shortfall.
Step 5: Confirm and Close
Click Confirm (or Close Register) to submit the closing report. Point records the closing float, variance, and timestamp. The register is now closed for this session.
Closing reports are stored in the system and can be reviewed from the dashboard under Reports > Register Sessions. Use these reports for daily cash reconciliation, shift handovers, and identifying cashier discrepancies over time.
Summary
Opening the register sets the starting cash float so Point can accurately calculate the expected cash at end of shift. Closing the register generates a summary of all sales, returns, and payment methods, then compares the expected till balance against the physical cash count. This daily workflow keeps your books accurate and makes cash discrepancies easy to spot.
